As the British Columbian (BC) blueberry season comes to a close, the BC Blueberry Council is optimistic this season will finish on a high note.
Favourable weather and late maturity have produced high-brix, high-quality fruit in the Canada’s primary blueberry growing region, according to the industry body.
“Our region’s hot days and cool nights provide optimal, natural conditions for growing high-quality blueberries,” Debbie Etsell, executive director of the BC Blueberry Council in a company statement.
The Council estimates that this season will roundup mid-September with this year’s harvest to reach 68,000 tonnes, a step up from 2013’s 55,000 tonne crop.
“This year’s weather has been true to British Columbia’s reputation, and we have strong volumes of high-brix Elliot blueberries heading out to customers to show for it,” said Etsell.
Canada is the third-largest producer of highbush blueberries, exporting to the US, the UK, Japan, India and Hong Kong.
