China fuji apples

Apples grown in China's Shandong province are set to make their debut in the US after the first shipment left the city of Yantai on 9 November.

The US granted access to Chinese apples earlier this year, with growers in Yantai saying they will work on developing apple varieties to cater to US customers, according to China Daily.

While more than 80 per cent of Yantai’s apples are shipped to markets in South East Asia, exporters have told the China Daily that expanding shipments to the US will offer a boost to Shandong’s apple industry, which exported 116,000 tonnes of apples in 2014, valued at US$169.1m.
