US cherries

New Zealand cherry exports have hit a record 3,390 tonnes for the 2015/16 season, with domestic sales also up, newshub.co.nz has reported.

The performance significantly betters the 2,700 tonnes of cherries shipped overseas in 2014/15, according to the news report.

'There could be another 200-300 tonnes of export cherries and maybe another 150 tonnes on the New Zealand market yet to be reported,” Summerfruit New Zealand chief executive, Marie Dawkins, told newshub.co.nz.

A record 1,775 tonnes of cherries has also been sold in the New Zealand domestic market to date, with Dawkins pointing to the some 70,000 tourists who visited the country over the Chinese New Year period as a driving force behind the increased sales.
