Australian walnuts have hit the international market for the first time, with nuts from the east coast of Tasmania exported to Germany.

The company behind the exports, Webster Fresh, said there’s high demand in Germany for in-shell walnuts, reported the ABC.

“We have always seen it as our first point of entry into export,” said managing director Nigel Carey

“This has been our first harvest of some quite large commercial volumes this year - four times the volume we've harvested in previous years.”

“It's presented the opportunity for us to put a small export program together this year.”

“Particularly, as we begin bringing production on from New South Wales orchards as well, we'll start to have some large commercial volumes and we'll need a large export footprint.”
