The Philippines’ Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) is aiming for increased access to the Taiwanese market for the country’s papayas, mangoes and bananas in 2009.

MECO is pushing for the conclusion of market access discussions with Taiwan next year, and is hopeful the country will open up for the Philippines’ tropical fruit exports, reported Balita.ph.

“Quality is key to Taiwan’s fruit and vegetable market, and we are confident that the Philippines’ agricultural produce will meet the exacting requirements of the Taiwanese consumer,” said MECO’s managing director Antonio I Basilio.

Mr Basilio emphasised mangoes, papayas and bananas in the push for access. “These products are our next big export items to Taiwan.”

Taiwan and the Philippines have also been cooperating on biotechnology programmes, and Mr Basilio said MECO hopes to strengthen its ties with Taiwan’s Food and Fertilizer Technology Center, and reengage with the country’s Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center.
