Major Chinese fruit group Goldland is set to complete the development of a new sales operation and distribution centre in Beijing by the end of June, in time to service demand for the Olympic Games.

'We'll be supplying high-quality local and imported fruit to the Olympic event and to the main supermarket chains in Beijing,' said the firm's Kevin Chen.

The Beijing operation will be based on Goldland's established model in Shanghai, where it has forged a category management role for retailers. With its advanced banana ripening facilities, Goldland Fruit (Shanghai) has become the agent for Unifrutti bananas in China, importing 60,000 boxes of green fruit from Unifrutti Philippines each week.

Meanwhile, imports of US cherries are set to double in 2008, driven by a projected increase in demand during the Olympics, according to a USDA report. US cherry producers have invited Chinese cherry importers to visit the US on a trade mission next month.
