Vietnamese dragon fruit growers are doubling their returns thanks to a novel pesticide made from brewery waste developed by Australian researchers, reports ABC.net.
Growers reported a dramatic rise in their dragon fruit revenues, from 5,000 dong per kg to 10,000 dong per kg in one case, after using the intoxicating 'bug bait' in their orchards, ABC said.
Two Vietnamese breweries are now commercially producing the lethal brew, which blends treated yeast with small amounts of poison, it is considered so effective.
The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, a government aid body which funded the development phase of the pesticide, told ABC some of the results have been remarkable.
The beer bug bait originated from the laboratories of Griffith University in Queensland.
