APM Terminals has announced in a news statement that it has successfully won a new deepwater container terminal bid for the Port of Lazaro Cardenas – a major Pacific Coast port in Mexico.
The new terminal, known as TEC2, represents a 32-year concession of a greenfield site for the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of a new container terminal, the company revealed.
APM Terminals said it has partnered with Mexico’s largest, leading construction company, ICA, which will operate a 5 per cent share in the facility.
“We are honoured to receive this award from the Port Authority to launch a new era in Mexican ports,” said APM Terminals CEO Kim Fejfer.
APM said its vision is to make Mexico’s infrastructure more competitive by investing US$900m to create significant economic benefits nationwide to lift Mexican business and society through a stronger port.
The new port is expected to boost the country’s international trade competitiveness, attract more foreign investment and reduce logistics costs through higher operational efficiency.
Phase I of TEC2 will represent an investment over US$300m to build a 43ha container yard, 650m quay with two berths, an administration building, warehouse, gates and modern on-dock rail facilities.
New container handling equipment will include five Super-Post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantry cranes with 2-wide container row reach; 17 Eco-RTG’s (Rubber tire gantry cranes), a fleet of trucks and other specialised cargo handling equipment.
