Market research group Mintel published a report on October 12, which found that sales at the UK's corner shops have grown by almost eight per cent over the past two years. The gains have not been made at the expense of supermarkets, but are a big change in fortunes for the convenience sector which until 1999 was only experiencing growth of one to two per cent year on year.

Part of the reason for the corner shop recovery could be their fresher offer and drive to compete with the offer at multiples. This includes an increasingly broad range of fresh produce. The result is gains in sales as consumers seek top-up purchases.
