Long Life Solutions (LLS) introduced the packaging, which enables the product to live longer by helping it generate its own atmosphere. The bag was launched in the UK last year and has been eagerly picked up by growers in the US and Peru since then.

Andrew Wright, managing director of LLS said: 'Over the last 10 months we have worked with the largest asparagus groups in the world, including Washington asparagus growers. The response has been incredible because we are extending the life and freshness dramatically.' Wright added: 'Supermarkets will be able to offer a much fresher product, and ultimately the product benefits the customer.' The LLS Bag extends the season and asparagus will keep tender and tasty for up to three weeks. Study results from Stellenbosch University in South Africa indicate it may become possible to have fresh asparagus available all year round.
