Waitrose tops compassionate league

Compassion in World Farming Trust (CIWF Trust) today presented the second annual "Compassionate Supermarket of the Year" award to Waitrose at an awards' ceremony in London.

CIWF Trust has spent several years working with the 10 leading supermarkets and evaluating them on more than 100 different animal welfare measures. The performance indicators against which the supermarkets were judged included the proportion of free-range and organic produce sold, commitments to reducing animal transportation times and policies against genetic engineering.

The first award last year was won by Marks & Spencer. The top five supermarkets this year were:

1.Waitrose 53.5 (out of 63)

2.Marks and Spencer 47.6

3.Co-operative Group 41.6

4.Tesco 33.5

5.Safeway 31.7

Kerry Burgess, CIWF's Campaigns Director, who conducted the survey, said, 'Through the survey, CIWF Trust aims to improve farm animal welfare standards by benchmarking the progress of the country's primary retailers. Waitrose is a clear example of a supermarket committed to making such progress and we are delighted to give them due recognition for their efforts.'

Stephanie Chafor, technical manager, who received the award on behalf of Waitrose, responded, 'Waitrose is delighted to receive this great accolade from CIWF Trust. Waitrose has worked for many years to ensure exacting standards of animal welfare and it is great to be recognised for our efforts in this way'

CIWF Trust has published the complete results of its audit in a major new report "Supermarkets and Farm Animal Welfare 'Raising the Standard.'
