Special Fruit Pakistani mangoes

Pakistani mango exports rose almost 150 per cent to 91,000 tonnes during the 2014 season, according to the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (NFS&R).

Strict quality protocols and help from Pakistan’s private sector and the Ministry of National Food Security have been cited as factors driving the increase in exports, with the EU ban on Indian mangoes opening up the European market to Pakistan.

Following the ban on Indian mangoes after intercepted consignments were found contaminated with fruit fly, NSF&R and Pakistan's Department of Plant Protection took precautionary measures and imposed mandatory hot water treatment for all mango exports bound for the EU.

This year, the 4,131 tonnes of mangoes were exported to the EU during the season, which runs from May to October.
