Evesham-based fruit packing firm Ackio has named Paul Tyrer as its new general manager.

Tyrer, previous general factory manager at frozen food company Ross Young’s, will oversee operations and ensure the business continues to operate to BRC grade A* standards.

“I chose to join Ackio as it’s such a forward-thinking company,” said Tyrer. “As a technology-led, specialist contract packer, Ackio’s competitive position is reliant on its relentless invention and investment in new technology.

“Processes and packing applications are custom-designed and configured to meet clients’ demands, which makes Ackio’s operational and service capabilities unique. My engineering and production experience is a perfect fit with Ackio’s continued programme of innovation.”

The news comes as Ackio invested in a new device that allows blueberries to be shipped loose and in bulk, while previously they were packed into punnets at source. The new device takes less shipping space, which in turn reduces costs, and provides the flexibility to pack in different punnet sizes in the UK in response to market demand, Ackio said.

The firm said it is the first to bring this equipment to the UK, and has since upgraded the device to pack cherries and a new range of snack-pots, which can be filled to an exact weight.
