Chilean cherry

Aided by a bountiful harvest, cherry sales are up 87 per cent on 2014 at Waitrose.

Demand for cherries is continuing to grow, and to keep up with demand, the retailer is increasing cherry orders on a daily basis.

On Waitrose.com, meanwhile, recipe hits for cherry Pimms punch are up 77 per cent, cherry pie hits are up 35 per cent, and cherry cheesecake torte hits are up 25 per cent.

At the family-owned farm of Waitrose cherry grower, AR Neaves & Sons, in Doddington, Kent, a sunny spring helped grow their harvest by more than a fifth.

The annual flowering of the cherry tree, which can last up to three weeks, was helped by warm days and chilly nights which made the flowers thrive and the harvest abundant.

Nicki Baggott, Waitrose fruit buyer said: 'British cherries are a favourite with our customers and we choose ours very carefully. We only buy a small number of varieties that we know have the best flavour and are top quality, working closely with our growers to ensure we get consistent sweet tasting cherries in every punnet.'

British cherries are available in Waitrose branches and online for £2.20 for a 200g punnet.
