Fresh produce giant Capespan has hired former Keelings manager Nick Fermor for a newly-created head of technical role.

Based in Maidstone, Fermor will lead the technical team and have direct responsibility for driving technical agendas with customers and suppliers. He joins Capespan from Keelings where he was technical account manager for Tesco.

He will retain the current technical team with Stuart Forsey as technical manager in fruit and Malcolm Hoare in salads. Samantha Ware is compliance technologist and leads the company’s ethical and CSR agendas.

A Horticulture and Business Management graduate from Writtle College, Fermor has worked with key grower and importer businesses in various technical roles, including technical manager for grapes.

“Over time we anticipate further strengthening the team as we continue to broaden our technical influence on the supply chain,” a Capespan statement said.

“This latest appointment is part of Capespan’s program to reposition itself in the UK, strengthening its customer focus to support new business and a broader 52 week procurement role.”

The news follows the June appointment of Jason Ram as new trading manager for wholesale and third part supply, meaning managing director Steve McVickers now has an “entirely new commercial team”, Capespan said.

The business has also expanded its Canterbury based packing facilities with further investment this year in grape, citrus and salads packing capacity.
