RG Abrey Farms has announced the opening of its new packhouse facility, aimed at helping the business to diversify

The third-generation family business, which grows crops including onions, potatoes, carrots and parsnips for the pre-pack market, is now looking to diversify its range with the inclusion of the new packhouse.

The Breckland-based grower'snew facility is certified to BRC Grade A, and extends the current range available to 1kg form fill, in line, nets, loose trays and cartons.

Tom Abrey, partner and senior onion business manager, said: 'The current focus is on providing their retail customers with year-round supply of UK brown onions grown on-farm by utilising new varieties and improved husbandry techniques, but the future plan is to pack other vegetables grown on the farm.

“The packhouse gives us as a family and business the opportunity to add another service to our customers. We grow, grade, pack and haul all our own material and help bring our customers closer to the product. We are really looking forward to further developing the packhouse with the introduction of other lines and products in the New Year.”

The new facility will be powered by solar panels and the introduction of a new AD plant on site maximises the use of waste generated adding to long term sustainability.
