Trade body British Onions has named Produce World’s Andrew Holding as new chairman and Bedfordshire Growers’ Tim Elcombe as vice chairman.

The new appointments were announced at the British Onions AGM, held in February. Speaking at the AGM, Holding thanked outgoing chairman Chris Wilkinson for his contribution to the association over the last four years, included overseeing two successful onion and carrot Conferences.

In his closing report, Wilkinson highlighted the “extraordinary degree of co-operation” between the various marketing and technical members of British Onions, many of whom compete for business on a daily basis. He said this is something of which all members should be proud.

He also said that there was the stable area of bulb onions grown in 2015 coupled with reasonable yields means that UK onions are in adequate supply, and are predicted to be available for almost as long as the record season length in 2015.

Holding, who has been with Produce World since 2007, currently manages the company’s Chatteris onion packing site as well as the potato facility at Sutton Bridge.
