Cauliflowers: In short supply

French cauliflowers are selling for an unheard of £3 each this week as wholesalers across the country urge customers to consider replacement veg in the run up to Easter.

One wholesaler at New Spitalfields Market said he has “never seen the price so high”, while traders at Liverpool also reported record price spikes.

Manchester firm Bettaveg tweeted: “French caulis – think diamonds are cheaper at the moment,' while Total Produce Cornwall warned that volumes are limited and quality is poor.

Growers had warned of a spring shortage before Christmas, as “nightmare” mild temperatures brought the crops forward. Key cauliflower-producing region Cornwall experienced temperatures as high as 13 degrees in December that prompted a glut of produce on the market, while Spain and France were also packing ahead of schedule.Screen Shot 2016-03-23 at 15.41.42
