Waitrose has become the first UK supermarket in 20 years to stock fresh British Morello cherries.

The variety is not usually grown in the UK nowadays, with the trees more commonly used in orchards as a pollinator. However family-run Boxford Farms in Suffolk has produced a crop for the supermarket.

The fruit is set to go into Waitrose stores this week.

Waitrose fruit buyer Nicki Baggott said: 'With their vibrant skin, flesh and juice, and a rich flavour, they are perfect for pies, cakes and preserves and work especially well with chocolate.'
