The east of England is at risk of tidal flooding

Fruit and veg production in the east of England could be at risk from severe storms and flooding with numerous weather warnings in place today (13 January).

Norfolk and Suffolk have 11 severe flood warnings in place, and the Environment Agency said there is danger to life due to the risk of tidal flooding or waves overtopping sea defences along the eastern coast of England.

But potato grower Tim Papworth, whose business LF Papworth is located close to the north Norfolk coast, said the weather had improved over the afternoon. 'The weather situation here is not as bad as expected, a little snow this morning, which has now all gone and the wind has picked up so there may be some issues later but all okay at the moment,' he said.

There was a risk of 'significant' flooding in some areas from the lunchtime high tide, which was expected at about 12:30pm, with further warnings issued in Suffolk from around 9.30pm, the Environment Agency said.

In addition there are 88 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected and immediate action is required, and 78 flood alerts.

Some flooding is also possible in the Essex, as well as the South West and Somerset.
