New Zealand apple exporter Golden Bay Fruit has launched a new apple to the UK market bred from parent varieties Pinkie and Rose.
Known as Prem 34, the new variety is as yet unnamed and comes from the Prevar breeding programme. It has deep pink-red skin, while taste has been described as tropical with some hints of pineapple. Flesh is sweet, crunchy and juicy.
The first pallet will be delivered to a UK retailer this season, with 50,000 trees planted in New Zealand by Golden Bay.
Commercial manager, Patrick Meikle, said: “Golden Bay is at the forefront of developing this new variety that has come from the Prevar breeding programme.
“We are also partnering with selected growers across the major growing regions to ensure reliable 12 month supply. So far Golden Bay has the largest volume with 50,000 trees already planted, and we are planning to ramp up significantly.”
“We are getting very positive feedback from all global markets as this apple caters to all tastes,” he added.
