Growing Underground has won two retail listings for its urban micro greens

Urban farm Growing Underground has won the prestigious BBC Future Food Award with its innovative micro greens growing system in disused air raid shelters under Clapham High Street.

Announced at the BBC Food and Farming Awards this week, other nominations in the Future Food category included Northern Irish organic kelp producer Islander Kelp and The Seed Co-operative, a community-owned seed co-operative in Peterborough.

On receiving the award, Growing Underground co-founders Steve Dring and Richard Ballard said: “We've been listening to the food programme for 15 years…to be nominated is very, very humbling indeed. It's all about the team back on the farm who are not here today, wish we could thank everyone.”

Unicorn Grocery, based in Manchester, won Best Food Retailer with its focus on organic and Fairtrade products and were praised by judges for the range of produce on offer.

The Best Food Producer went to lentil grower Hodemods, described as producing the “first lentil grown in England since Roman times” by chef and judge Giorgio Locatelli.
