New Zealand apples

New Zealand apple growers won’t receive payments from apple export giant Turners & Growers until the end of this month, following a tough season with difficult conditions in Northern Hemisphere markets.

The company usually pays growers at the start of October.

Jeff Wesley, head of Turners & Growers’ apple subsidiary Enza, said last season varieties like Braeburn and Jazz were the hardest hit.

A combination of tanking global economies and the stored remains of very large apple harvests in both Europe and the US combined to sour the export deal for New Zealand.
