New agreement will help enhance Chilean fruit supply into Chongqing and the surrounding region

The Chilean Fruit Exporters Association, Frutas de Chile, and Chongqing Shuangfu Agricultural Products Wholesale Market have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost Chilean fruit trade into western China.

The agreement was signed on 22 October as part of the celebrations of the 55th anniversary of China-Chile diplomatic relations and the tenth edition of Chile Week China, organised by ProChile.

Iván Marambio, president of Frutas de Chile, said Chongqing was a key market and transportation hub for the region.

The agreement with the Chongqing wholesale market is a clear sign of Frutas de Chile’s strategy to diversify and deepen its market penetration beyond first-tier coastal cities, as the consumption potential also extends to second-, third-, and fourth-tier cities, where we aim to reach with high-quality fresh fruit, such as our iconic cherries,” said Marambio.

“Chongqing opens the door for us to directly reach the heart of southwest China and strengthen our supply chain.”

Claudia Soler, executive director of the Chilean Cherry Committee, said Chile aims to make cherries a fruit for every occasion, not just for Lunar New Year celebrations.

“In Chongqing, Chilean cherries have become not only a festive consumption item, but also a preferred choice for daily home consumption. Furthermore, cherry consumption in Chongqing also displays distinct regional characteristics,” Soler said.

“As a mountainous city, e-commerce platforms, especially instant e-commerce service retail channels, play a prominent role. For this reason, we will continue to strengthen cooperation on online platforms.”

As part of the MoU, Frutas de Chile and the Chongqing wholesale market agreed to facilitate mutual visits by delegations with the goal of fostering agreements and direct business. The parties also committed to strategic information sharing and creating a regular communication mechanism to share essential data on production, market conditions, consumption trends, and regulatory policies.

Finally, the parties will collaborate in organising promotional events, including new product launches, tastings, and press events, especially during the Chilean cherry season, to strengthen awareness among local consumers and buyers.
