Apparel and homewares retailer Muji has opened its flagship store in Tokyo, Japan, complete with a fresh fruit and vegetable market.
The Japanese retailer opened the store on 28 July, which features a range of chemical and pesticide-free vegetables and seasonal fruit with a focus on traditional Tokyo-grown produce.
The company said it wanted to create an offer for its customers that made them think about where their produce comes from.
“Citi-dwellers … have become far removed from the fields, farms, and fisheries where the food is produced, and have come to consume food simply as a commodity,” Muji said on its website. “Many people have no idea who produced the food, or the land or the sea that cultivated it.”
Located on the first-floor of the flagship store, Muji said it would display signs above each produce line with a message from the growers and information on how to eat the produce.
“In addition, about 300 pieces of stringently-selected grocery items will be offered, including seasonal fruits, seasonings that go well with vegetables, and snacks featuring vegetables.”
