New varieties for Thai, Indonesian and Singaporean markets are all small in size and sweet in taste, responding to modern consumer trends
Dutch breeder Rijk Zwaan has launched a trio of melon varieties for high-end retailers in Asia, focusing on a smaller size profile, high Brix, and a light, aromatic flavour.
The three new melons, named Chokai (green-fleshed netted variety), Diagoji (golden netted with orange flesh) and Joral (green-fleshed netted) are all grown in Thailand and Indonesia, for sale in both countries, as well as Singapore.
As well as open field, they have been developed for indoor hydroponic production, which allows up to five growing cycles per year. Joral is a particularly sweet variety, boasting a Brix of 20-22.
In addition, Rijk Zwaan is on the hunt for growers and retail partners in Asia for its mini ‘edible seed’ Candy Ball watermelons, which began production in Spain in 2025.
“High-end retailers in Singapore are now asking for a ‘couple’s size’,” explained Novianto, Rijk Zwaan’s client manager for Southeast Asia. “Candy Ball watermelons weigh just one to two kilos and are a perfect size for two people to share.”
