First consignment arrives in Malaysia after access was granted in November 2024
Taiwan has celebrated its first shipment of pomelo to Malaysia, according to the Taiwan Ministry of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA).
The 3.6 tonne shipment was transported to Malaysia via sea and inspected by local quarantine officials on 18 September before passing customs the following day.
Negotiations began in 2023 and when Taiwanese officials submitted detailed reports on cultivation, climate, pest management, and post-harvest handling. The process was concluded in November 2024 when Malaysia finalised its quarantine requirements and granted access.
According to APHIA, Taiwan’s pomeloes have a tender, juicy texture with a sweet and sour taste and high nutritional value, which highly sought after in domestic and international markets. Malaysia is the latest market to receive pomeloes from Taiwan, with the fruit already exported to Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines.
The Ministry of Agriculture said it will continue to work to expand agricultural product exports and provide support to farmers, implementing relevant education and training, product traceability management, and export quarantine procedures to enhance Taiwan’s high-quality pomelo export and marketing capabilities.
