Thai officials have seized 1.5 tonnes of unripe durian at a Chanthaburi packing facility that failed to meet the required dry matter standards, according to a report by The Nation.

The seizure was part of a broader operation targeting durian sorting and export facilities in multiple locations in an effort to safeguard Thailand’s agricultural standards and maintain confidence in its fruit exports.

Random testing at a facility in Sa Kaeo subdistrict revealed that various packed boxes of durian failed to meet the minimum 32 per cent minimum dry matter content required for Monthong durian exports.

According to The Nation, officials ordered the dismantling of 350 boxes, weighing around 7 tonnes. A total of 529 unripe durians were identified, with a combined weight of approximately 1.5 tonnes.

The fruit was then marked with red spray paint to prevent it from being exported, and the operator was issued a formal warning. Repeat violations could lead to suspension of export licences for between 30 and 90 days, or possible revocation, the report said.

Thai officials have stressed the importance of strict quality control, warning exporters to adhere to specified requirements and remove immature or damaged durian from the export chain.
