British Airways World Cargo invested £15 million into its Perishable Handling Centre to cater for the needs of the rapidly growing traffic in airfreighted produce.

The centre is managed by Christian Salvesen, BA’s partner in the venture and its overriding objective is to preserve the quality and freshness of imported produce on its way to supermarkets and other outlets.

It handles 85,000 tonnes of produce a year and the provision of temperature controlled conditions maximises shelf life by reducing dwell time, best of all handling costs have reduced, typically by 36p in the case of a medley tray of cut fruit.
