The BCPC has awarded its annual medal to Professor Clive Edwards, Dr Trevor Lewis CBE and Professor Phil Russell.

The presentations were made by the BCPC's president Dr Barry Thomas to people considered to have made an outstanding contribution to crop protection.

Edwards is recognised world-wide as an authority on earthworms and is the author of a book on the topic. Lewis has lectured all over the world on a number of topics including the biology and ecology of thrips and leaf-cutting ants, insect distribution in crops and pheremone monitoring systems. And Russell is an authority on fungicide use and the management of resistance.

Lewis said: 'It is particularly pleasing to receive a BCPC medal when crop protection is incorporating so many new branches of science. I am grateful to be involved in these exciting developments and also the relaunch of BCPC and its wider agenda.' And Russell added: 'I have been attending the BCPC conference for 25 years and seen many people whom I have held in high esteem receive the BCPC medal. I never expected that I would join them. Being awarded the medal is an honour that is all the more valuable as I have received it for doing a job I believe in.'
