The British Retail Consortium has launched a report into healthy eating, outlining the measures supermarkets are taking to encourage their customers to opt for healthier food choices.

The report, 'Eat Well and Drink Well', encourages a healthy life style among consumers and details voluntary improvements made by supermarkets in nutritional labelling and in the nutritional profile of popular foods – often by reducing the levels of salt – giving consumers access to a healthier diet.

MP and member of the catering select committee, Janet Anderson said: 'The need for a balanced diet has a central place in the public health agenda. I am delighted that UK retailers are making a real contribution to the health of the nation and to the debate linking consumer tastes with healthier eating.' Bill Moyes, director general of the BRC added: 'Retailers are playing a full part in helping the Government's aim of encouraging healthier eating and drinking. 'Eat Well, Drink Well' acts as a showcase for healthy eating activities being undertaken by the industry. However, diet is a matter of personal choice. Neither Government nor food retailers can force consumers to lead healthier lives.'
