The Cameo apple brand won the Best Exhibit award and, for the third time, the Tastiest Apple award at the National Fruit Show, indicating that UK consumers’ tastes are moving in line with their European neighbours.

Fiona Davidson, European project manager at Cameo Europe, told FPJ: “We are used to this praise in Europe, so now the UK is catching up.

“It is difficult for a new apple variety to get recognition in the UK and even though we opened our first commercial orchard in the UK more than 10 years ago, it is a long journey. Gala was found in 1934, but it is still considered a new variety. In England, the average consumer does not know many apple varieties.”

Cameo is a cross between Golden Delicious and Red Delicious, which produces a bi-coloured, crispy and sweet apple. “We have 20 Cameo orchards in the UK and 150 in Europe,” added Davidson. “We would like to get more growers in the UK, as there is a lot of demand for home-grown apples in England and the variety adapts very well with the climate.”
