Capespan has secured the ongoing commitment of Rooigras farm in the shape of a five-year lease contract of the property to support its grapefruit strategy.

The fruit division’s ceo Louis Kriel said the farm has an excellent export-quality track record. “And it’s our intention to sustain this,” he continued. “Therefore, we will engage with the beneficiaries to ensure the necessary skills transfer for the business to remain a profitable, world-class citrus export concern.”

Capespan has been exporting citrus from Rooigras, near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga, South Africa, for a number of years. The farm has 350 hectares of citrus orchards.

The farm, which has 350 hectares of citrus orchards, has increased its export pack-out over the years.

More than 640,000 cartons were exported last year, of which nearly 300,000 went to Japan.

The estimate for this season is almost 650,000 cartons.

Capespan has retained management including operational manager Jaco Snyman, pictured, as well as all 130 permanent workers.

Kriel said: “It’s important for Capespan to secure farms such as Rooigras to guarantee sustained delivery to our valued customers.”
