Carrots are top for kids

Schoolchildren from St Martha’s Catholic Primary School in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, visited Warren Farm in Swaffham last month for a Carrot Carnival to celebrate the launch of new-season British carrots.

The Year 2 pupils, who are aged between six and seven, were also given a farm tour in a tractor and a puppet show starring superhero Captain Carrot doing battle against the evil Baron Von Burger and his army of Noxious Nuggets.

A survey at the school showed pupils are already huge carrot fans, with nearly 90 per cent of them saying they like carrots, and more than half of them saying they are their favourite vegetable.

To mark the start of the harvest, the British Carrot Growers’ Association also commissioned a survey to find the nation’s favourite British “carrot top”. The winner was TV presenter Anne Robinson, followed by Prince Harry and Catherine Tate.

New-season carrots are much prized for their fresh, sweet, aromatic flavour and are so tender that farmers harvest them in the middle of the night so they are not damaged by the sun’s rays.

More than 24,000 tonnes will be harvested from the East Anglia region over the next few weeks.
