Child's winning Bramley dish to be on Michelin-starred menu

Children in Kent are having their innovative entries to the Best Bramley Apple Dessert competition judged by two Michelin chefs as they compete to win £500.

The nine to 18 year olds from schools around the country are competing in a cook off at Thanet College and the winner’s dish will be put on the menu at Kent’s Michelin-starred Apicius restaurant.

Tim Johnson from Apicius and David Pitchford from Read’s Restaurant in Faversham will judge the competition.

Pitchford said it’s crucial to get kids in the kitchen early on.

“It’s really important for children to start cooking and appreciating food at an early age and I’m always supportive of ideas that can put food back on the curriculum for schools,” he said.

Tim Johnson said: “The competition has been excellent with a very high standard of entrants. We feel all seven finalists stand a good chance of winning”.

The schools through to the final stage are Dulwich Preparatory School, Cranbrook’s Hoath Primary School and the Mead School, Tunbridge Wells’ St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Bexley’s Cranbrook School, Wilmington Grammar School for Girls and the New Line Learning Centre in Maidstone.

Heather Thomas from the New Line Learning Academy in Maidstone says her pupils are “in it to win it”.

“This is a very exciting competition and if we win we could certainly put the £500 prize money to good use”, she said.

Phil Acock, Managing Director of Fourayes Farm in Bicknor is putting up the £500 prize.

“We wanted to do something to promote Kentish produce during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the idea of a competition for Kent schools seemed a good one. We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the children,” he said.

Thanet College has had many successful graduates including Gary Rhodes.
