Chile hits onion high

Chile experienced a 10-year record in onion exports during January and February this year with volumes reaching 15,000 tonnes and values topping $6 million with the UK market playing a major role in the product's success.

Figures released by the Chilean customs authorities show that the UK is the leading market for the country's onions accounting for 34 per cent of all sendings followed by the US on 32 per cent.

Uptake from the UK, the US, the Netherlands and Colombia accounted for most of the year on year increase in sendings of 7,500t, representing a 98 per cent hike in volumes.
