Four UK schools have been awarded £20,000 each by Chiquita bananas to transform their school grounds.

Chiquita appointed the school grounds charity, Learning through Landscapes (LTL), to manage and create an educational, inspiring environment for children to play in.

LTL senior development officer, Neil Jameson said: 'In a recent study, 73 per cent of schools surveyed believed improving school grounds led to considerable improvement in pupil behaviour, 84 per cent thought social interaction had improved and 64 per cent believed it resulted in raised self-esteem. By working with companies such as Chiquita bananas, we are able to not only give ownership of the space to the children but also provide them with the money to make their ideas a reality thereby fostering a natural sense of responsibility and pride in their surroundings.' Bramley Primary School was just one of the four schools to receive the award. Niamh Ni Dhonaill from Chiquita bananas said: 'The Chiquita Regeneration project has been a huge success with teachers and pupils putting together ideas and designs for their playground. These have come to fruition under the guidance of LTL to create environmentally friendly areas in which the pupils can extend their learning.'
