Conifer growers concerned over image

Conifer growers have expressed concern that their produce is being portrayed in a poor light among both professionals and the media.

Jon Tate, chairman of the Association of British Conifer Growers, told Commercial Grower that conifer producers face a constant battle to get the message out that the plants are not a hard work and unimaginative choice of plants.

Tate believes that conifers still suffer from an image cultivated in the 1970s, when the plants were marketed as slow growing. A number of large plants still survive from that era.

“It’s so difficult to get through to people,” he said. “There is a lack of knowledge of how to treat conifers.”

However Tate said ABCG was ‘doing its best’ to get the message out on limited resources, with the National Conifer Week, now in its third year, making steady progress and now being supported by more than 500 garden centres.
