Cornish earlies gear up

The first covered Cornish new potatoes have arrived on the market ahead of the outdoor crop, set to come on stream next week.

This season, which started around a week later than last year as a result of the colder winter conditions, will see supplies build over the next two weeks.

The region’s mild climate and the warmer Gulf Stream air are well suited to early production.

Growfair - Pride of Cornwall is supplying the earlies from its network of growers in the region.

David Wallis, who supplies exclusive wholesaler Bristol Fruit Sales, told freshinfo the first outdoor liftings are expected between April 19-25. He said: “So far, the glasshouse and polytunnel crops are providing token liftings and they are being sold in very small quantities, in boxes rather than bags.

“This week, we have sold earlies on the farm at £1-1.20 a lb and we are hoping to keep prices up.

“The quality is very good indoors because we can control the conditions, but the outdoor crop is looking well. We have had rain and now we could do with some warm sunshine this week.”
