The EPC claims the combined efforts of the EU authorities and the UK Department for the environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) have achieved a brown-rot-free Egyptian new potato in the UK and Europe.

EPC chairman Dr Tadros said: "These measures have assured the housewife that buying an Egyptian new potato is now safer than any other potato that has not been tested for brown rot. Brown rot affects the yield of potatoes when planted and has no effect in terms of consumption." Dr Tadros spoke following Defra's reminder in December that measures to control potato disease have come into force. Under the new requirements, only potatoes grown in recognised disease-free areas can be imported.
