EU school scheme wins support in Luxembourg

A free fruit and vegetable scheme for EU schools worth €90 million (£71m) is to be put in place next year, after winning support by farm ministers in Luxembourg yesterday.

The European Commission pledged the money to fight obesity in Europe, where 22 million children are deemed overweight and five million suffer from obesity.

The commission has already pledged to pay for the purchase and distribution of fresh produce to schools, matched by national funds in the member states that choose to make use of the programme.

Farm ministers have met over the past two days to negotiate the “health check” of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which will involve tighter budgetary controls and a redistribution of CAP funds.
