Everybody needs good neighbours

A British grower has written to the Prime Minister in a bid to get neighbours to ‘say it with flowers.’

Derf Paton, of Pinetops Nursery in Hampshire, told Gordon Brown that as he has expressed interest in promoting a new bank holiday, putting forward the message that being a good neighbour is a key message for all mankind.

On a practical level for growers, ‘Good Neighbours Day’ reinforces the need for farm businesses to have good relations with those that live around them.

Paton suggests that a bunch of flowers can help build bridges and develop good relationships between neighbours. He proposes the third Friday in September for the initiative.

He also believes the concept could lead to the development of a national ‘Good Neighbour of the Year Award’, a theme that could be taken up by towns around the country.

A logo has been created, which symbolises the curvature of planet Earth with a hedge between two houses illustrating the fact that there are always boundary disputes. The hand holding the flowers depicts the thumbs up sign of goodwill, while the lazy smoke coming out of the chimneys represents contented tranquillity.

Paton hopes that any organisation using the copyright will donate 10 percent towards either the Hospice Movement or the Heart Foundation in the country in which it is used.

Paton told Commercial Grower that while the initiative would not cost the industry anything, it could give a major boost in terms of flower sales.
