The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed the news that the introduction of the new scheme to tax lorries by distance has been delayed from 2006 to 2008.

The announcement was made to delay the Lorry Road User Charge by the Chancellor Gordon Brown in his budget speech.

FTA chief executive Richard Turner said: “Although we are keen supporters of the proposed plans, we welcome the sensible and practical step which the government has taken in delaying the process. The difficulties, which resulted in the abandonment of a similar scheme in Germany, demonstrated the need for a more realistic timetable in the UK. We want a scheme that is fit rather than fast.”

“Lorry Road User Charging represents a revolutionary means of taxing vehicles and there is tremendous potential from getting it right - but massive dangers if we get it wrong.”
