The Grimaldi Group plans to invest €1.5 billion (£1.3bn) to introduce 24 vessels in the next two years and improve connections across the continent and to the UK.

The move will see the introduction of Adriatic lines linking Italy with Greece and Tunisia and will strengthen the connection between Italy and Spain, which are expected to boost routes to the UK.

Guido Grimaldi, commercial manager of the Grimaldi Group, told freshinfo: “A lot of these new lines will improve links to the UK.

“It was difficult last year and the shipping sector saw an average decrease of 35 per cent because of the economic downturn, but we have grown because of reefer traffic.”

The firm already has two main routes, the Euro Med and Euro Aegean, which link the UK with Europe.
