Horticultural importer and multiple sector Hortic Express has been awarded a 2004 WorldStar award for horticultural packaging innovation and design.
The patent-pending Orchid Box was the culmination of a two-year development partnership between the Spalding-based firm and Kappagreen, the sales and marketing division of Kappa Packaging.
Hortic express managing director, Andrew Nicholl-Smith said that the development brief was simple. “We needed a postal pack that would enable us to deliver flowering orchid plants without damage to our customers’ homes via a postal or courier network. Orchid blooms are particularly delicate, so it’s the unique design features that were engineered into this pack that has made it possible for us to send orchids safely through the post.”
Orchid box consists of an inner fitment that holds the plant, while the flowers are cushioned by an insulating fleece. An additional outer box offers rigidity and overall protection.
