HTA publishes new booklets

The HTA has published a free Plant Advice Guide to support this year’s PlantforLife campaign.

The focus of this year’s campaign is to encourage ‘marginal’ gardeners to visit their local garden centre or nursery and take more interest in gardening. So far over 600 HTA member nurseries have signed up for the initiative, according to the association.

The new guide has been created in association with Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins, and aims to give clear descriptions of 20 popular flowering plants and shrubs to encourage gardeners to plant up.

The guide lists plants under their common names, and also includes phonetic pronunciations to give consumers the confidence to ask about and purchase the plants. The publications will be provided to participating retail outlets, while it is hoped that media coverage and a survey on attitudes to gardening will also help sway the public to download copies of the guide from the HTA website.

PlantforLife research has already identified a lack of confidence and gardening knowledge among the general public, with over a third of people not making the most of their garden. The ‘information gap’ has been pinpointed as a major reason preventing people from gardening.
