Israeli strawberry season kicks off

The Israeli strawberry season is underway with the Yuval and Orly varieties already reaching the UK supermarkets.

Exporter Agrexco is predicting increased volumes of the fruit on last year with good weather conditions creating a promising crop.

Agrexco UK general manager Oded Yacovson said: “We are looking forward to a good season especially as we will have a greater volume than last year. We are packing for most of the premium multiples and we feel particularly confident that they will be equally happy as we are with Orly - a variety exclusive to us through our partnership with Fertiseeds. The fruit is of excellent quality, medium sized, with good colour and high brix level.”

Orly has proved a promising proposition in its early stages and is now being grown in Ethiopia and Morocco under the guidance of Agrexco and is in its second year of exports all under the international Alesia brand. This season will also see Agrexco exporting strawberries from Palestine under the Coral brand.

Yacovson added: “It is a busy and challenging time for us, especially in the build up to the Christmas period and desks will be busy both here in the UK and in Israel. Ian Crispin continues the great work he started here last year and I am delighted to take this opportunity to introduce Liran Laffer as our new product manager in Israel who is also responsible for grapes.”
