British lettuce growers are rejoicing in a good season and welcoming promotional activity, after two years in the doldrums.

According to the British Leafy Salads Association (BLSA), demand is up by up to 15 per cent for home-grown lettuce and is set to soar if pleasant weather prevails.

David Piccaver, chairman of the BLSA, told FPJ: “Looking at weather patterns, we have seen better weather this year, although predominantly in the South East; we are yet to see the whole country bathed in glorious sunshine. The significance of this is that late May and most of June have seen an improvement in demand of 10-15 per cent, depending on customer. If we have a spell of fine weather countrywide, we would expect to see an uplift in market activity of 20-30 per cent so, in terms of the fortunes of our lettuce industry, the weather is a dominant factor, but suppliers still have to cater for this potential demand.”
