Select Lincolnshire brought a group of high-profile London chefs to the county for 24 hours to meet fruit and vegetable producers and taste their produce, with a view to using it in their restaurants, last month.

Select ambassador chef Rachel Green hosted the event at her kitchen in the Wolds, welcoming executive chef of the Coq d’Argent D&D group, Michael Weiss; executive chef at Barclays Hotel, David Burnet; executive chef of The Millennium Hotel, Knightsbridge, Paul Knight; Alex St Luce from Michael Moore’s restaurant, and Chefs Connection at New Covent Garden’s Danny Murphy, to a day-long presentation.

Jill McCarthy, project manager of Select Lincolnshire, said: “Each producer was given a timed slot of half an hour, in which they could showcase three products. Rachel then did a wonderful job of showing off the produce by cooking it in all sorts of ways, which everyone then tasted as we went along.”

Six producers - Fenmarc, QV Foods, Freshgro, Keys of Lincolnshire, Abbey Park Farm and Jack Buck Growers - took the opportunity, which meant that 18 dishes were tasted. With the focus on fresh produce, they ate everything from chicory, fennel and celeriac to Chantenay carrots, Bellaverde broccoli and potatoes.

Weiss said: “This is fantastic produce. I’ve never been invited on a trip like this before and I would love to be able to use this in my restaurants in London.”
