McDonald's salads boosts profits

McDonald's introduction of salads to its menu has helped boost its depressed European business, following similar US success.

European sales have improved significantly this month, according to recently installed chief operating office Charlie Bell.

Profits came out at $511 million compared with $327m in the same period last year, the fifth successive quarterly improvement since the fast-food chain launched a recovery programme.

McDonald's has been juggling with menus and products to counter criticism, particularly in Europe, about an unappealing and unhealthy range.

The company says it is planning further changes to build on the European recovery.
